Q: What are the Terms and Conditions?

A: Each bank has its own Merchant Agreement for the use of their EFTPOS terminal.  Before receiving your terminal, you will generally be required to sign and return the Bank’s Merchant Agreement.

Where a bank accepts Bartercard EFTPOS transactions via the Bartercard Membership Agreement, each member consents to the use of Bartercard transactions on their EFTPOS terminal, and that they will act in accordance with the terms of their Membership Agreement, which includes the Bartercard EFTPOS Merchant Agreement for electronic transactions with a bank.

You can download the latest version of the Bartercard EFTPOS Merchant Agreement for Electronic Transaction [Adobe PDF approx size 65kB].

Q: How will Bartercard EFTPOS impact on our members?

A: Members who facilitate EFTPOS to process their Bartercard transactions will benefit through increased security - the possibility of providing goods or services to a purchaser who is not a valid cardholder or providing goods or services to a purchaser who is in possession of a lost or stolen card will be greatly reduced.

Members who make sales through Bartercard enabled EFTPOS terminals will have the added benefit of having the funds cleared in their account almost immediately for their use. There will no longer be a need to complete the paper vouchers and wait for these to be processed - they simply need to swipe the card through their EFTPOS machine, and the funds are theirs.

Q: What if I don't use EFTPOS normally? Can I still use my Authorisation Slips and Multiple Trading Vouchers?

A: Some members will not be able to use EFTPOS for a variety of reasons. For example, an EFTPOS machine may not be cost effective for the member.

Where a member cannot use EFTPOS, then using Authorisation Slips and Multiple Trading Vouchers is acceptable.

Q: When will any funds from transactions performed on EFTPOS be available?

A: Members who utilise Bartercard EFTPOS facilities will be provided with confirmation immediately through their terminal, the same as they would in the cash economy when customers come to them and utilise their cash banking account (keycards/cash cards).

Processed funds will be available for use and usually cleared in a member's account, within two hours of processing the transaction. This window is to allow for back-end automated processing through hosts, and connection to the appropriate data servers for uploading into the Bartercard Administration Application.

Once the transaction has been uploaded in our database, the member will be able to utilise those funds.

Q: How much will a Bartercard EFTPOS transaction cost a member?

A: Members who meet the criteria to receive the Bartercard EFTPOS functionality will not be charged any additional service charges to facilitate Bartercard EFTPOS through their terminals. In fact, Bartercard pays the bank for the Bartercard transaction processing charges performed through the member's terminal.

Members will still have to pay the standard Bartercard administrations and processing fees that they would normally.

Q: Can you find out what I have purchased through EFTPOS if I forget what I have bought?

A: As EFTPOS transactions are electronically processed transactions, Bartercard does not have any way to determine what was purchased from another member.

Customers will need to ensure that they keep their copy of the transaction slips provided to them once the purchase has been approved, to reconcile with their monthly statements.

Of course, Bartercard will be able to provide a trading name, or general information as to what a merchant does, however the specifics of the transaction itself will not be available to view as they are with a paper voucher transaction.

This is exactly the same process as using a credit card purchasing from a store - the bank does not record the particulars of the transaction, only the amount transacted, the parties involved and the date.

Q: Will Floor Limits still be honoured with EFTPOS transactions?

A: Floor limits have been used to guarantee the funds to a selling member when a transaction was initiated, in the absence of an electronic funds transferring system.

With the introduction of EFTPOS, it is no longer necessary to rely on the floor limits of cards as processing is "live" and immediate.  Transactions will now be based on funds availability and active account status.

Q: Who do I contact if I have a problem with EFTPOS?

A: Dependant upon the challenge that members are experiencing with EFTPOS, a number of different contact centres have been arranged to assist members with efficient and practical advice for their concerns.

If a member has a problem with their terminal not functioning, then they should contact the bank that supplied their terminal first.

Should a member have a query relating to Bartercard card processing through EFTPOS, they are able to contact Bartercard National Office during business hours on 1300 BARTER (1300 227 837). Trained operators will be able to assist them to determine what the challenge is, and provide solutions.

It is important to remember that if a member is not able to process cash transactions on their EFTPOS terminal, they will need to contact their bank for assistance, as this is a technical issue that can only be resolved by the bank.

Q: What if I am not approved by the bank for EFTPOS?

A: Some members will not be able to be approved for EFTPOS due to the nature of their business or creditworthiness.

It is important to note here that being a Bartercard customer will not grant you automatic access to an EFTPOS machine. If you are declined from having an EFTPOS terminal, Bartercard will not be able to help you in any way in obtaining a terminal. The decision for terminal provision remains completely with the banks.
